2012 Ocean Literacy Summit
More than 180 people attended the 4th biennial Ocean Literacy Summit on November 1st and 2nd at the University of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay Campus. New ideas and programs are already in the works thanks to the great networking opportunities it provided!

Our fourth biennial Ocean Literacy Summit focuses on Principle 7, “The ocean is largely unexplored,” the last of the seven Essential Principles that define Ocean Literacy, the understanding that you influence the ocean and the ocean influences you. This definition is the result of discussions among 100 scientists and educators in 2005, and serves as the national standard for ocean science education.
Who Should Attend?
NEOSEC’s membership recognizes that ocean scientists and educators have much to learn from each other. Our strategic plan illustrates our vision for the two disciplines in this way:

There are limited opportunities, however, for education and science practitioners and researchers to share their expertise. The New England Ocean Literacy Summit provides important opportunities for formal and informal educators, ocean scientists, and policymakers to make connections. To demonstrate the power of collaboration and communication among professionals in these sectors, all of the Summit’s concurrent sessions feature scientists and educators as co-presenters.

This year’s concurrent sessions are split into five tracks, corresponding with five fundamental concepts of Principle 7. The sixth concept, that ocean exploration is an interdisciplinary effort, will be taken up during the panel discussion at the end of the day.
