Ocean Literacy
Principle 1: The Earth has one big ocean with many featuresMarine invasives outreach on vectors. Tide, current, and circulation studies.
Principle 2: The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of the Earth
Coastal erosion, coastal hazard outreach and education. (e.g. beach profiling program) Sea level rise education and outreach.
Principle 3: The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate
Climate change programming (phenology monitoring, Maine’s Climate News website, Maine’s Climate Future report, etc.). Ocean acidification. Freshwater cycle, freshwater quantity, and precipitation patterns. Temperature moderation (long term), and coastal weather patterns.
Principle 4: The ocean makes Earth habitable
Freshwater availability. Temperature moderation.
Principle 5: The ocean supports a diversity of life and ecosystems.
Coastal watershed research and education programming. Marine invasive species’ impact on biodiversity of ocean ecosystems. Citizen monitoring programming. Citizen-based area management.
Principle 6: The ocean is connected to us and we are connected to it.
