Gundalow Company is offering a free professional development workshop this summer aboard its new gundalow. Fifth- and sixth-grade teachers* will learn to use hands-on science activities, field experiences and local scientific data to teach about marine life, water quality and human impact on the local environment. All activities will be based in Portsmouth, NH over several days: August 16 and 17 for classroom and field work; a half-day in September for a free boat-based field trip for your class; and a follow-up evening session in October.

Registration now open with limited space. Please e-mail education@gundalow.org for registration and information.
*While this is geared toward fifth and sixth grade teachers, registration will be extended to other grades as space allows.

This workshop is offered at no cost to teachers thanks to funding through NOAA’s Bay Watershed Education and Training Program – which is designed to provide “meaningful watershed educational experiences (MWEE)”. The nonprofit Gundalow Company is one of four organizations working together on NEOSEC’s “Get WET in New England”.

On Earth Day, April 22, visitors at New England Aquarium had a chance to get their pictures made at the I Care Photobooth. In this activity, participants were able to choose one of five chalkboards to fill out and then pose with it. Their statement choices were:

I care by…
One new thing I will do now….
I love…
My favorite…
Today I learned….

You can visit the Aquarium’s website to view pictures from the event. The I Care exercise was part of a Blue Discoveries Family Day. On select Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, Aquarium educators lead hands-on activities in the main building that encourage visitors to Live Blue. The activities are designed to engage the whole family to learn more about the planet through art, science and storytelling. Plan your next visit to New England Aquarium around one of the Blue Discoveries Family Day. Dates for upcoming events can be found here.

Salem State University recently chose Captain Rob Yeomans as one of two recipients of their Friend of the Earth Award. Rob, co-founder (with his wife, Kate) and Education Director of BOAT CAMP Nature school, is also a high school science teacher at Newburyport High School.

Each year, The Earth Day Planning Committee at Salem Sate nominates candidates for the award to be given during Earth Day events in the spring. Salem’s Earth Day theme was “Sustaining Our Oceans: Key to Earth’s Future,” and there is no doubt that Rob’s energetic approach to education, both in and outside the classroom, coupled with the success of BOAT CAMP Nature School are what earned him this honor.
