MIT Sea Grant Announces Ocean Science Summer Internships

MIT Sea Grant is now accepting applications for the Summer 2012 Ocean Science Internship!
Applications due: April 13, 2012
Program Dates: July 2nd – July 27th, 2012
Open to: High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Stipend: $800

About the Internship
Over the course of a four-week program, interns will work collaboratively to investigate the intertidal zone in the Boston Harbor Islands. The student work is part of an ongoing ecological assessment and non-native species monitoring effort conducted by MIT Sea Grant in collaboration with the Boston Harbor Islands National Parks Service.

Students will gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of marine ecology. Interns may also have the opportunity to work with engineers, biologists and/or policy experts who design, build and utilize autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

Who Should Apply
Successful applicants will:

  • Be students who are entering their junior or senior year of high school, or students who will be entering college in the fall
  • Be responsible, investigative thinkers
  • Have a strong interest in, or currently be pursuing, studies in ocean science
  • Be at least 16 years old by program start date (July 2, 2012)

    Encyclopedia of Life Education Innovation Challenge

    The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) is pleased to announce the EOL Education Innovation Challenge, an international competition to foster development of educational software tools, services, or games using EOL content. The challenge is to use EOL content and services to create an engaging and educational application that will promote global learning activities focused on discovering and understanding the living world.

    The competition will award funding to the most scalable and innovative applications. Target audiences can include the general public, citizen scientists and learners of all ages in both formal and informal settings. The platform can be the web and/or mobile devices.

    The Challenge is a two-stage process. In Stage 1, applicants submit a product idea that includes an overview of the concept. Applicants who are selected to continue to Stage 2 will be asked to submit a development plan and budget required to complete a working product. One or more prizes will be awarded to successful Stage 2 proposals.

    The prize total is $50,000 USD, which may be divided among one or more successful applicants. In addition to the cash award, the winners’ work will be promoted and distributed by EOL.

    Sea TURTLE Accepting Applications for 2012 Program

    The New England Aquarium announces the 2012 Sea TURTLE (Teen Underwater Research, Training and Learning Expedition) program is now accepting applications.

    Students in grades 10, 11 & 12 can earn Open Water SCUBA diving certification with a team of peers, immerse themselves in the marine biology of New England, and then safely test their diving skills on a local overnight expedition. Applicants must be strong swimmers, and should provide evidence of interest in marine science. Preference is given to those who that have participated in another Aquarium teen program(including Teen Ocean Summit), although is not required to apply. The program fee is $1,700. Need-based scholarships are available for a limited number of applicants. All applications must be submitted by April 2.

    Undergraduate Fellowship Opportunity

    The Rhode Island NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) will award at least 35 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) to qualified undergraduate students interested in participating in a 10-week mentored research project in the marine life sciences and climate change. In addition to receiving professional research experience and training, SURFs will be awarded a stipend of $4200, plus $500 for research supplies. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2012.
